It seems that @wenti found her creative outlet and to celebrate the unveiling of her new product line I got to turn the house upside down for some funky looking product shots. But of course it’s the mutskes that steal the show.

Setup
The trick was to find a way to mount the hats, since we don’t have babies in different age groups freely available we turned to balloons instead. At first the balloons were held upright by putting a magnet inside the balloon and one underneath a glossy piece of paper, but 999 balloon bursts and 2 very scared kittens later we went for a different approach: suspend the hats from a crossbar with a nylon thread. (this involves a clever mix of sewing, taping & cursing)

This week I had a very fun evening session assisting Sofie on her salsa-school shoot. Who would have thought I’d ever set foot in a dance school …. Salsa is about rhythm, I knew the shot I wanted to make but I ran into a bit of a wall when I wanted to combine the ingredients Canon, PocketWizard Plus II, 580EXII and 2nd curtain flash. It just wasn’t possible, but the Nikon CLS system saved the day and claimed victory. I’m sure Sofie will be posting the results of that very soon, so do drop in at her blog.
So I happily played my role as assistant, helping out with the light setups and I got to work on my boom-arm skills!
But I wouldn’t be going home happy if I wouldn’t have been able to make a creative portrait of Tom.
Not your classic Rembrandt model
One in black&white but being the colorful person that Tom is I think color suits him best.
Set up
A couple of boring curtains where lit up by a red-gelled-580EX on the background, 1/32th power zoomed at 85mm. Red for salsa passion! I keep finding the amazement on the subjects face very pleasing if they say “wow, where did that red light come from?”. The main light was a vivitar 285HV at 1/16 fired into a silver brolly positioned close to 90° camera left of the subject. Moved in rather close and slightly higher than the subject. Even at 90° the parabolic shape of the umbrella makes the light wrap around the subject and it’s doesn’t look linear. On shot 3 & 4 I payed attention to the fact that a part of the (camera)right eye was visible but that is personal taste.

Eerlijk, ik ben geen grote fan van het gegeven “communie” en ook niet van de zeemzoete “communiekaartjes”.
Maar toen collega Caroline me vroeg voor haar oudste zoon Xavier eens voor de lens te nemen wilde ik die uitdaging wel aangaan.
Steven aka Gekiekt, pakt het communiegebeuren aan met een eigen visie, je blijft er zijn stijl inzien. Hij heeft dat nog gedaan denk ik dan. Werk dat ik nog meer bewonder is dat van Tom Museeuw aka Fotofolio en daarom dacht ik een poging te doen en de communiefoto’s aan te pakken als een kleine “kinder-fashion” reportage. Met 2 knappe jonge gastjes moest dat wel lukken.
Met kids omgaan is niet altijd even makkelijk. Xavier had er op voorhand niet zoveel zin in en was eerder benieuwd naar het plot van zijn Horowitz boek, dus Paul (de jongere broer) was mijn héél gewillige assistent die me hielp bij de setup en als stand-in voor de proef shots. Vooral het doen alsof dat de achterste speedlight een kanon was en dat hij mocht mikken op het hoofd van zijn broer vond hij helemaal geweldig.
Om Xavier aan mijn kant te krijgen gooide ik het op een akkoordje. Eerst gingen we een aantal nette foto’s nemen voor de mama, en nadien gingen we “ons” zin doen, het hemd uit de broek en de broek wat meer “baggier”. Worked like a charm 
Verder ben ik vooral mezelf gebleven, niet te serieus terwijl ik bezig ben. Een beetje uitleggen wat ik doe. Ik was niet de enige die graag eens knutselde , mijn DIY gel holders, gels & snoots zorgden voor bewonderende blikken. Paraplus op een zonnige dag waren ook nieuw.
Om een ietwat edgier licht te creëren heb ik een speedlight met snoot opgesteld rechtsachter (camera left) het model. En een shoot through met 1/4Cto gel camera-right. De sunbounce als fill voor het model.
Nadien nog een paar shots gedaan met behulp van de sunbounce.
Als het vat van Xavier op was heeft Paul me ook nog een paar poses getoond, er zit potentieel in !
Conclusie: Een leerrijke ervaring, en nog meer bewondering voor mr Fotofolio!
En ben ik de enige die een kleine resemblance zie met Daniel Radcliffe (Xavier) & Dev Patel (Paul) ?

The problem
On location work is fun, you always need to improvise. On location studio work is a tad more difficult, you need space to work. In this instance I was at my step-sister-in-law’s place, a place I know. We wanted to make some portraits against a black backdrop. so we had to move some furniture around to make some room to get a ghetto studio in place. I ended up with a 2×3 meter area (tight).
With this limited amount of space, I knew I would be unable to properly control the light and keep it from falling onto the background (the problem).
Recognize a problem before you encounter it.
The gear
-Lencarta Studio Background support system, extends from 2 to 3 meter and can reach 3 meter in height, simple & cheap.
-Some simple black cloth that you can find in any “sleepstraat” near you + some hardware store uni-clamps.
-A couple of 24″ x 36″ softboxes.
-2 lightstands and of course a couple of flashes, in this case I used a Canon 580EX and an Olyumpus FL40.
The solution
One possible solution would have been to put flags/gobos between the softbox & the backdrop. But remember,we are on a very limited space here.
Instead, I tore off 2 slaps of black cloth so they each could cover half of a softbox, tadaah , instant strip lights (or does the fall under the flag category?) and control over the spill. But there is another important reason why I opted for the 2nd option, with a narrower strip of light, the light wouldn’t completely wrap around the model and leave some unlit parts.
The diagram
The left light was positioned low and horizontal, the right light was moved in as close as possible at a 45° down angle.
The result
I really like the outcome, super female lines, some shadowplay and an accent on the belly.
And of course a big thank you to the model for the portfolio addendum.
(note, I’m still struggling with getting sharp images online at 800px, a browser resize from flickr’s large size seems to work best. At least with Firefox, chrome or safari)
